About this service

Aintree’s Stroke Centre provides a specialised range of stroke services to patients across Merseyside and the wider North West region. North Liverpool, sefton and Knowsley

The centre is led by a team of specialist stroke consultants who deliver timely and high quality care for the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of stroke patients.

As one of the first established specialist Stroke units in the country, the service has led the way in innovation and service development in Merseyside and across the wider North West region.

Notably is was the first Stroke unit in the region to offer a Thrombolysis service, an emergency treatment that is given within four and a half hours of a stroke to reduce damage to the brain.

Designed to enable patients to achieve the optimal level of independence, the Stroke team is supported by a highly skilled, dedicated multidisciplinary team who work together with to help patients regain as much independence as possible following a stroke.

The Stroke Centre has close links with the Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery with a combined consultant on call rota and joint integrated Stroke pathways for intervention.

The centre has approximately 550 stroke admissions each year.
