About this service

The Ophthalmology department deals with diseases and surgery of the eyes and provides a full range of general ophthalmic services

Our team of experts provide first class eye care and surgical services for a wide range of eye conditions, including the treatment and provision of specialist services that include:

  • Cataract
  • Glaucoma
  • Medical Retina – Diabetes, Age-related Macular Degeneration,
  • Retinopathy of Prematurity
  • Ocular motility (squint) – adult & paediatric
  • Neuro-ophthalmology
  • Oculoplastics
  • Optometry
  • Orthoptics
  • Ophthalmic Imaging
  • Accident and Emergency Eye Clinic Liaison Officer

This department also provides a state of the art angiography service for diagnosing medical retinal conditions and carries out screening for diabetic eye disease.

Our facilities

Our main department is in the Elective Care Centre where the team provide outpatient services, vision testing and treatments.

The team

We have a team of ophthalmology consultants who are experts in their field, who are supported by ophthalmic nurses and technicians, orthoptists and photographers.

  • Nima Ghadiri, Consultant , GMC No: 7045876

    Dr Nima Ghadiri is a consultant in Medical Ophthalmology, an interdisciplinary speciality centred on the diagnosis and management of eye disorders relating to systemic disease, as well as the medical management of eye disorders. He works at Aintree one day a week.

    Nima was born in the Wirral and graduated from the University of Cambridge. He has trained in both Ophthalmology and Internal Medicine at Cambridge, Oxford, New Zealand and Yorkshire, and has completed fellowships at Moorfields Eye Hospital and St Thomas' Hospital, London.  

    He has most recently worked as a Locum Consultant in Adult and Paediatric Uveitis at Moorfields and Great Ormond Street Hospital, before joining Liverpool University Hospitals as Medical Ophthalmology Consultant in December 2020.

    Dr Ghadiri is a member of the WHO technical working group for Uveitis, and the UK Uveitis National Clinical Study Group.  He is a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy and has completed a Masters’ Degree in Clinical Education, focusing on harnessing new immersive technologies to facilitate learning.  Recently, he produced national digital transformation and tele-ophthalmology guidelines to aid Ophthalmologists during the COVID-19 pandemic.

    He has an interest in the wellbeing and holistic care of both patients and staff, taking part in the inaugural virtual International Schwartz Rounds and exploring the role of art and horticulture in patient healing for national newspapers.
