About this service

The Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Department diagnoses and treats diseases of the ear, nose, throat and the head and neck along with providing Head & Neck cancer specialist treatment.

The department provides inpatient, outpatient treatment and emergency clinics for symptoms affecting the ear, nose or throat.

The ENT department treats a range of ear, nose and throat conditions, including:

  • Airway stenosis
  • Hearing disorders (both surgical and non-surgical treatments)
  • Acute & Chronic ear infections
  • Balance disorders
  • Rhinitis
  • Sinusitis
  • Allergies
  • Tear duct problems
  • Nasal trauma
  • External and internal deformity
  • Throat & Head and Neck Infections
  • Snoring and other obstructive sleep/ breathing problems
  • Salivary gland diseases
  • Swallowing problems
  • Voice problems
  • Spasmodic muscular disorders
  • Thyroid surgery
  • Skin cancer
  • Neck lumps
  • Head and neck cancers

Audiology services are also available and patients are entitled to detailed hearing and ear function assessments.

Many of these conditions are managed by Multidisciplinary Teams (MDT’s) where ENT staff work closely with other health professionals such as pathologists, speech therapists, specialist nurses, audiologists and hearing therapists.

The department has a strong commitment to academic progress, demonstrated by the strong publication and research record of consultants and most notably the addition of the Mersey Head and Neck Oncology Research Unit that is based at Aintree.

Referral information

When your GP refers you to the ENT department you will be asked to book a time on the Choose and Book system. We offer a variety of clinics throughout the week. When you come to clinic please bring your appointment card or letter with you as well as an up to date list of any medication you are taking.

Meet the team

The department consists of consultants, associate and staff grade doctors and trainee doctors. Our wards have highly skilled trained nurses, many of whom have diplomas and degrees in the field of Head and Neck Speciality and ENT and extensive experience in airway management, nursing highly dependent patients and in the management and care of complex wounds.

Our high skilled and experienced ENT consultants also work at other regional hospitals including Southport, Ormskirk, St Helens, Arrowe Park, and Clatterbridge.
