About this service

Endocrinology is the field of medicine concerned with disorders of the glands and hormonal systems.

The department of endocrine surgery at Aintree treats patients with diseases of the adrenal, parathyroid and thyroid glands that require surgery.

The department works closely with the neuroendocrine tumour (NET) service to provide the Endocrine Surgery and Neuroendocrine Tumour Service (Mersey NETS), a service particularly renowned for the surgical treatment of intra- abdominal neuroendocrine tumours.

Mersey Endocrine Surgery and Neuroendocrine Tumour Service

Mersey NETS provides treatment for people who live locally and tertiary services are provided for the North West, North Wales, the Isle of Man and frequently further afield.

The Mersey NETS service aims to provide the highest standards of care for such patients and wherever possible, this is accomplished using minimally invasive surgery with minimum hospital stay.

In addition to the strong links with Aintree’s Department of Endocrinology, the Mersey NETS service also works closely with ENT/Head and Neck surgery, Radiology, Nuclear Medicine and surgeons from The Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery for patients with complex endocrine problems including the pituitary gland.

The service provides:

  • A number of specialised clinics including endocrine surgery clinic and a multidisciplinary MEN (Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia) clinic that runs four times per year, which includes expertise from endocrinologists, endocrine surgeon, clinical geneticist and paediatric endocrinologist
  • Thyroid surgery is provided for benign and malignant disease.
  • Parathyroid surgery using small incisions (focused parathyroidectomy) where possible.
  • Intra-operative PTH (parathyroid hormone) measurement.
  • Re-operative thyroid and parathyroid surgery.
  • Laparoscopic and open adrenalectomy.
  • Surgery for intra-abdominal neuroendocrine tumours, performed laparoscopically where possible

The service also hold multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings whereby endocrine surgeons, ENT/head and neck surgeons, radiologists, histopathologists, nursing staff and specialists in nuclear medicine provide input to ensure patients are provided with the optimal treatment options.
