About the service

The Cardiology Department provides a comprehensive inpatient and outpatient service for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with a wide range of cardiac illnesses and conditions.

The department provides a full and comprehensive range of modern, diagnostic and therapeutic techniques in addition to specialist clinics, including:

  • Cardiac Laboratory – for cardiac investigations (including Echocardiography, ECG, Tilt testing, etc)

  • Inpatient Cardiology Wards including Coronary Care Unit, further monitored beds and general Cardiology beds
  • Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic
  • Heart Failure diagnostic clinics
  • Ambulatory Heart Failure Service (ambulatory intravenous diuretic service)
  • Ambulatory Atrial Fibrillation Service including clinics
  • Cardiac Rehabilitation Service
  • Liverpool Syncope Service

The Cardiology Department is progressive in developing services to meet the needs of patients. This has included introducing nurse and physiologist led services to improve access and the development of ambulatory models of care to deliver the highest quality of care whilst avoiding the need for patients to have a prolonged stay in hospital.

Providing care that is responsive to the needs and preferences of individual patients, the cardiac team are committed to their patients by:

  • Delivering timely, effective and efficient care in a manner which respects people’s dignity, privacy and individuality and within an environment that is safe, clean and comfortable
  • Developing partnerships and co-operation at all levels within the local health economy to ensure a seamless and patient-centered service
  • Giving all relevant information on individual treatment progress to patients and-with-consent-to their relatives and friends and to provide open access to general information about services, treatment and performance.

Referral information

All new patients can be referred via GP - either through Choose & Book, a letter to the Call Centre, via the Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic (two week referral), via internal tertiary referrals to the Call Centre or through the Cardiology RAS referral form.

The Team 

The Cardiology Department is comprised of Consultant Cardiologists, Clinical Fellows, Junior Medical Staff, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Cardiac Physiologists and Cardiac Nurses.

Our consultant team includes:

  • Dr Homeyra Douglas , Clinical Director, Cardiology. Consultant Cardiologist, Arrhythmia and Cardiac Device Specialist , GMC No: 4781136

    Dr Homeyra Douglas completed her training in Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital concentrating on Cardiac Electrophysiology and Complex Devices such as CRT and ICDs.  She set up two novel Ambulatory services (Atrial Fibrillation and Heart Failure/Ambulatory Intravenous Diuretic Services). She also set up a Nurse Led Cardioversion service at Liverpool University Hospital, Aintree site. These services have won multiple awards including the Team of the Year and Divisional Awards.

    Dr Douglas also set up the first nurse led Liverpool Syncope service.

  • Dr Malcolm Burgess, Consultant Cardiologist , GMC No: 4048275

    Dr Burgess is a clinical cardiologist providing comprehensive invasive and non-invasive services for patients with all types of heart disease. Appointments can be made available at short notice and care is provided in a safe and comfortable environment.

    Dr Burgess trained at the North West Regional Cardiac Centre at Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester and in Merseyside. After completing his MD thesis in Echocardiography he moved to the University of Queensland in Brisbane as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow to undertake advanced training in Cardiac Ultrasound. Thereafter, he returned to the UK to complete full specialist accreditation in Cardiology and General Medicine. Since taking up his NHS Consultant position at Liverpool University Hospital, Aintree site in 2007 Dr Burgess has played a leading role in delivering/developing a high quality Echocardiography Laboratory Service with a central role in Stress Echocardiography. Dr Burgess is a member of the Echocardiography Steering Group of the Cheshire and Merseyside Cardiac and Stroke Network. He is also active in Pacemaker Implantation and all aspects of Diagnostic Cardiac Catheterization. Dr Burgess is clinical audit lead for Cardiology at Liverpool University Hospital, Aintree site and organizes teaching programs for medical students and junior doctors. He is an examiner for the Royal College of Physicians.

    Although clinical work is Dr Burgess’ primary responsibility he continues to be actively involved in research in cardiovascular disease. He has collaborative projects with other departments that have attracted research grants and is an Honorary Lecturer at the University of Liverpool.   • Dr Som Chuah, Consultant Cardiologist , GMC No: 4013657

    Dr Chuah is a clinical cardiologist providing comprehensive invasive and non-invasive services for patients with all types of heart disease. Appointments can be made available at short notice and care is provided in a safe and comfortable environment.

    He is the Clinical Lead for the Nurse Led Heart Valve Surveillance. His main interest is Cardiac Imaging (3D, 4D and ECHO).

  • Dr Karen Clarke, Consultant Cardiologist , GMC No: 3167098

    Dr Clarke is a clinical cardiologist providing comprehensive invasive and non-invasive services for patients with all types of heart disease. Appointments can be made available at short notice and care is provided in a safe and comfortable environment.

    Dr Clarke has had extensive experience in leadership demonstrated by her last post as Divisional Medical Director.

  • Dr Papadopoulos, , GMC No: 7417393

    Dr C. Papadopoulos is a clinical cardiologist providing comprehensive invasive and non-invasive services for patients with all types of heart disease. Appointments can be made available at short notice and care is provided in a safe and comfortable environment.

    Clinical experience

    Dr Papadopoulos graduated Medical School in 2002. He obtained Cardiology Specialty in Greece 2015 and a Master Degree in Medical Research and Methodology.  He continued his cardiology training in United Kingdom and worked mainly in Manchester and University Hospitals of Birmingham. Since 2018 he was leading the HF services in Good Hope Hospital until his recent move to our hospital.

  • Dr Sankaranarayanan, Consultant Cardiologist , GMC No: 6040902

    Dr Sankaranarayanan is a Consultant Cardiologist who completed his cardiology specialist training in North West England hospitals (Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester Royal Infirmary and Blackpool Victoria Hospital) and obtained his PhD from the University of Manchester via £200,000 fellowship grant awarded by the British Heart Foundation.

    He is the Clinical Lead for Heart Failure at Liverpool University Hospital, Aintree site and Community Heart Failure Services Liverpool and South Sefton as well as the Ambulatory Heart Failure Unit.

    Dr Sankaranarayanan received the National Roy Award in 2018 by the HF patient Charity Pumping Marvellous, in recognition of his services towards heart failure patients such as developing the Heart Failure Mobile APP – Aintree Heart Failure Passport. The Aintree site Heart Failure Service was also recognized as a Beacon Site by the Heart Failure Charity Pumping Marvellous.

    Dr Sankaranarayanan was one of 15 cardiologists in the UK, selected by the British Cardiac Society for the inaugural Emerging Leadership Program and has recently been appointed to the British Cardiac Society Digital and Communications Committee.

    Dr Sankaranarayanan also has an active research role, having been appointed as NIHR Research Scholar and Honorary Clinical Lecturer at Liverpool Centre for Cardiovascular Science at the University of Liverpool. He has numerous peer-reviewed publications and has presented his research at national and international conferences. Dr Sankaranarayanan is the Principal Investigator for several multi-centre national and international clinical trials in Heart Failure and is also part of the Heart Failure Guidelines Development Team for Cheshire and Merseyside.

  • Dr Kanagala, , GMC No: 6064403

    Dr Kanagala is a Consultant Cardiologist with sub-specialty expertise in Heart Failure and Cardiac Imaging (Echocardiography and Cardiac MRI). Having completed his medical undergraduate training at the Royal Free Hospital and University College London, he underwent Cardiology specialist training in the East Midlands Deanery having also gained additional exposure to advanced Heart Failure therapies including cardiac transplantation at the Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Trust.

    In addition to performing Cardiac MRI, he is part of the team of Heart Failure Consultants who currently run the Diagnostic Heart Failure clinics. He was previously the Joint Clinical Lead for the Heart Failure Service at Liverpool University Hospital, Aintree site (2017- early 2020).

    He has developed both a National and International profile for Heart Failure and Cardiac Imaging, with numerous peer-reviewed publications and presentations at International Conferences. He has previously held positions in both the Communications and Education Committees of the British Society of Echocardiography and written many National Guideline protocols as either lead or co-author. He was Runner-up for the Young Investigator Award at the British Society for Heart Failure (2015) and was nominated for the prestigious International Early Career Award (Clinical) at the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance in 2018 (Finalist).

    Having obtained a PhD from the University of Leicester, which was also awarded the University Prize, he remains extremely active in Research at Liverpool University Hospital, Aintree site as Principal Investigator collaborating with International researchers in multiple clinical trials. He is also Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at both the University of Liverpool and University of Leicester and a member of the Liverpool Centre for Cardiovascular Science Research Group.
