• When a person dies in the Critical Care department, some of the processes following this varies to that of other departments.
  • If the death needs to be referred to the Coroner, the nominated next of kin will be made aware of this (for further information, please refer to the Coroner information page)
  • The Critical Care staff should inform the nominated next of kin to contact Critical Care 48 hours after death by telephone, or if your loved one has died on a Friday evening you should contact the unit on the following Tuesday or Wednesday, this should also be the case if there is a Bank Holiday.
  • You will be provided with a contact number when staff give you the ‘Help following a bereavement’ booklet
  • Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD) can be collected from the Critical Care department, If you would prefer not to return to the unit, please inform the staff and arrangements can be made for you to collect the certificate from the Bereavement office instead.
