Under the Equality Act 2010, the Trust has to make it as easy for disabled people to use health services as it is for people who are not disabled. This is called making reasonable adjustments. There is a legal requirement for reasonable adjustments to be made at the Trust to ensure that all patients receive the best standard of care.
These could be things like:
- making sure there is wheelchair access
- providing easy read appointment letters
- ensuring signposting is clear and easy to follow
- offering extra time to people who have particular communication needs to make sure they understand the information they are given
- using a healthcare passport to document useful information about the patient and their health needs. It also contains useful information such as their interests, likes, dislikes and their preferred method of communication.
