Aintree University Hospital sponsors and hosts both National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and non NIHR activity.
The Government's Plan for Growth, published in March 2011, announced the transformation of incentives at local level for efficiency in initiation and delivery of clinical research.
This applies to all clinical trials hosted by the organisation and all Trusts and, as part of the contractual arrangements, must submit data [relating to the two benchmarks below] to the NIHR Central Commissioning Facility (CCF) on a quarterly basis.
The overall aim is to increase the number of patients participating in clinical research and to enhance the nation's attractiveness as a host for research.
Aintree University Hospital and other NHS providers will now be measured against the following two performance benchmarks:
Performance in initiating clinical research - 70 day benchmark
Clinical Trials must be set up & the first patient recruited within 70 days from receipt of a valid research application.
Delivery of clinical research – Time to Target
This is the number of clinical trials that meet the target recruitment before the closure of the trial. The data relates to trials that have finished, highlighting whether the trial achieved the anticipated recruitment target agreed between the Trust and sponsor.
